I was recently criticized by one of my colleagues, who represents the insurance companies about something on my website. He said that because I “passionately defend business interruption claims,” that I cannot be independent when offering an opinion about a business interruption valuation.
Let me make it perfectly clear that, although I may use different assumptions than those who represent the opposing side of a claim, I do offer independent opinions. I often have spirited conversations with clients who want me to submit slanted and unsupportable calculations. Let me affirm just as clearly that I can’t be part of something that can be deemed illegal or, at a minimum, unethical. That said, once I have published my opinion, then I’m going to passionately defend it! It is my professional opinion that I am defending.
If you work with an expert, in any field, who is not passionate about what he or she does, then you may want to reconsider who you’re working with. This is my life’s work. This is what takes me away from my family for hours, days, and sometimes weeks at a time. This is what I devote spare time reading about, taking classes for, and discussing with my peers. So if you want to accuse me of being passionate about my chosen profession and passionate about defending my professional work product, there’s no need to wait for a conviction. I plead guilty as charged.
